Assistant Youth Program Coordinator: Kidspace (20 hours per week, Part-Time) - Lake Elmo

The FamilyMeans’ Youth Development program is currently seeking a Kidspace Program Coordinator. The primary purpose of this position is to plan, provide and assist in evaluating age-appropriate enrichment and recreational activities for children grades K-5; ages 5 – 11. This position provides a variety of enriching activities to a wide age range of children on a daily basis, instills positive social skills and a responsibility ethic in children, and supervises programming in, and care of, the elementary portion of the agency’s Youth Center located in Lake Elmo, MN. The incumbent would work 20 hours per week, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and would report to the agency’s Youth Program Manager. Hours can be shifted earlier on no school/summer day, depending on program needs. 

Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to plan, provide and assist in evaluating age-appropriate recreational and enrichment activities for children grades K-5; ages 5-11.

Major Challenges:

The major challenges of this position are to provide a variety of attractive activities to a wide age range of children on a daily basis and to instill positive social skills and a responsibility ethic in children.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Plan and implement activities that foster positive personal and social development.
  2. Develop youth's social skills through activities, mentoring and/or role modeling.
  3. Acquire and manage supplies
  4. Assist in data gathering and evaluation efforts.
  5. Help establish and maintain connections with participants’ families and the greater community.
  6. Contribute to quality assurance efforts in the organization.
  7. Assist with kitchen duties.

Equipment Used:

Computers; digital recording equipment; telephone; office equipment; kitchen appliances; hand tools, art tools, sports equipment and cooking utensils.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma; two years' experience working with youth, preferably in a youth center or recreation setting. Ability to relate effectively and in a positive manner with youth and adults from diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree of two-year program or two years of college in a human services field such as: as School-Age Care, Child/Youth Development or Elementary Education
  • Proficient in Conversational Spanish.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Good literal and verbal communication skills.
  • Good mentoring and facilitation skills.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

  • Frequent standing and walking during program activities.
  • Frequent fine motor use of hands during writing, keyboarding or other program activities.
  • Visually and audibly monitor youth during activities.
  • Bend, stoop, reach and kneel during activities.
  • Carry up to 50 pounds while managing supplies.
  • Communicate verbally—with participants, staff and over the telephone.
  • Travel for supply acquisition, meetings, activities.
  • Read and write.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, and precipitation during children’s activities.

Job Parameters

20 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 2-6pm, or as scheduled with Program Coordinator. Occasional weekend, morning and evening hours. Position is part-time.
