Easy Ways to Support a Caregiver in Your Life

Feb 19, 2025

According to the Caregiver Action Network, more than 65 million people, or 29% of the United States population, provide care for chronically ill, disabled, or older family members or friends during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing yjat care. Given to this high number, there is a good chance that someone in your life is a caregiver.

Caregivers often feel isolated as they struggle to balance caring for their loved one, managing a household, and potentially working a job. Though caregivers may not ask for help, they often need it. Our Caregiving & Aging staff suggest four ways that you can help support a caregiver in your life, whether it’s your parent, spouse, family member, or close friend.

  • Listen and provide emotional support
    • Lending an ear might seem simple, but it can be one of the most meaningful things you can do for a caregiver in your life. Offering validation can be an enormous source of comfort.
  • Offer help
    • Many caregivers hesitate to ask for help even when they need it most. Offering to assist with errands, chores, meals, or daily tasks can make a difference in their day-to-day life.
  • Encourage self-care
    • Maintaining your own self-care can be a challenge when you are providing constant care for someone else. Encourage them to seek help if they are struggling mentally, promote healthy habits, and engaging them in community activities can be beneficial.
  • Give them a break
    • Caregiving is often a 24/7 job, and some caregivers rarely get a chance to rest. Offering to stop in for even a few hours a week can allow them some time to step away and recharge. A brief break to run errands, see a friend, or simply relax can help restore energy and improve emotional well-being.
