Art education and design result in large-scale mural created by teens
STILLWATER, Minn., June 11, 2012 – In the Twin Cities’ tiny town of Landfall, population of 700, participants of the city’s Teen Center have been working hard the past couple of months in conjunction with Minneapolis-based Juxtaposition Arts, a youth arts organization, to design a large-scale outdoor mural for Landfall’s Teen Center building.
The mural project happened in a series of phases. Learning about mural history along with style and design was phase one. Then, the teens practiced working on cardboard before priming and prepping the actual wall where the mural would find its home. One of the teen participants presented the group’s final designs to the City Council for approval.
“The entire process has been a great experience for the teens,” said Paul Shanafelt, coordinator of the Teen Center in Landfall. “The mural design consists of all original drawings and concepts from the teens.”
Grants from America’s Promise Alliance and the Boss Foundation helped fund this project.
FamilyMeans began working with Landfall youth in 1992. The Landfall Teen Center, housed in a loft, has been the community gathering spot for older youth since 1999. FamilyMeans has a year-round presence in Landfall with staff dedicated to both children and teens. In 2011, Landfall was honored as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the U.S. for the third time. It was one of only four Minnesota cities to receive this national achievement.
